Intellectual Property Office Fees
When you apply to register a trade mark you have to pay a non-refundable application fee to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). The fees vary depending on the number of trade marks you register and the number of classes you register in.
UK trade mark application fees
To register a trade mark in the UK, the application fee is £200 per trade mark in one class. If you make the application online, the fee is £170. Additional classes, when added to the same application, are charged at £50 each. So, for example, registering a single trade mark in three classes would cost £300 (£270 if the application is made online).
If you register a trade mark and then wish to add further classes later, you would have to make a new application and the full application fee is payable.
If you wish to register two trade marks, for example a name and logo separately, the fees double. If the name and logo were combined, this would count as only a single application.
After 10 years, a renewal fee is payable for each trade mark. This is £200 per trade mark in one class and an additional £50 for each additional class.
EU trade mark application fees
To register a trade mark in the EU, the application fee is EUR 1000 per trade mark in one class. If you make the application online, the fee is EUR 850.
The fee for the second class of goods and services is and additional EUR 50. The fee for three or more classes is EUR 150 for each class. So, for example, registering a single trade mark in three classes would cost EUR 1,200 (EUR 1,050 if the application is made online)
Again, if you wish to register two trade marks, for example a name and logo separately, the fees double. If the name and logo were combined, this would count as only a single application.
After 10 years, a renewal fee is payable for each trade mark. The renewal fees are the same as making a new application and vary according to whether you renew online or on paper.
Whilst the EU IPO trade mark fees are significantly higher than the UK IPO fees, you must remember that an EU trade mark gives you protection in each member state of the EU.
There is no VAT on IPO fees.
